40,000,000 sounds like Anglesea won the lottery. Should we applaud or cry? Well…
The Sulphur Dioxide Emissions from the Alcoa Power Station currently is in the order of forty million kilograms or 40,000 metric tons per year.
The emission of sulphur dioxide (SO2) is but one of many substances emitted into the air over the unsuspecting Anglesea community. It is a colourless gas, with a strong suffocating odour formed by the combustion of materials containing sulphur. Brown coal mined at Anglesea contains sulphur content of around 3.5% so Alcoa tells us. This is twelve times higher on average than Latrobe Valley coal.
In the combustion process emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) react with water vapour in the atmosphere to create sulphuric and nitric acids and other pollutants. The resulting sulphuric and nitric acids can fall as wet or dry depositions. Wet deposition is precipitation: acid rain, snow, sleet or fog. Dry deposition falls as acidic particulates or gases.
A wonderful concoction of chemicals peculiar to third world countries. Um…..Where the…. are we?
It is documented Sulphur dioxide breathed at concentrations of 10 to 50 parts per million for 5 to 15 minutes causes irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, choking and coughing. If breathed constantly at much lower levels presents a real risk to those with impaired heart or lung function to asthmatics and other individuals sensitive to its effects. Repeated or prolonged exposure to moderate concentrations may cause inflammation of the respiratory tract, wheezing and lung damage. It has also proved to be harmful to the reproductive systems of experimental animals and caused developmental changes in their newborn.
Alcoa naturally informs us that, “SO2 is commonly used as a fruit preserving agent, in wine making, as a bleach and as a fumigant for growing grains, grapes and citrus fruit. Natural sources of SO2 include volcanic eruptions and decaying vegetation.” Does this smell like spin, grapes being compared to respiratory concerns or is that they have an intention to preserve the fish in the Anglesea River as well as residents?
Alcoa tell us that they monitor their SO2 emissions and consult with the community. Does the Anglesea community actually get told what they are exposed to and how it can affect their health? Does Alcoa also advise the Anglesea community that they will cover all medical bills associated with their toxic emissions? Does Alcoa really care? Is profitability more important than Anglesea lives?
All the testing and monitoring Alcoa does in Anglesea, Australia, only proves that their emission is dangerous.
Where are our elected representatives Liberal, Labor, Nationals and Greens when we need them?
In particular Gillard (ALP), Abbott (Lib), Truss (Nats), Brown (Greens), Cheeseman (ALP), Baillieu (Lib), Katos (Lib), Mulder (Lib) and Webester (Surf Coast Shire).
Obviously not in Anglesea!

Simply wanna comment that you have a very nice website , I like the design and style it actually stands out.
This article keeps it real, no doubt.
I had no idea that a volcanic erruption is the natural source of SO2, thanks for sharing such information with us.
This is the sort of present, lottery call it what you like, that is not appreciated. Will the Government do something, I think not.

Thanks for other informative blog. Keep it up.
The brown coal in Anglesea has a high sulphur content averaging 3.5% + much higher that Alcoa admits.
Bring on Flue Gas Desulphurisation. Alcoa knows that it is required to safe guard the community.
