Anglesea Primary School Project

This information is obtained from the Australian Government.  They know…..

Alcoa emits particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 this affects humans and other animals in the same way.   These Particles are micrometers or less in diameter, by way of comparison, a human hair is about 100 micrometres, so roughly 40 fine particles could be placed on its width.   In other words very, very fine Particles.

These Particles in general, affect the aesthetics and utility of areas through visibility reduction and may affect buildings and vegetation.   The specific effect of particles depends on their composition, concentration and the presence of other pollutants such as acid forming gases.  Alcoa also emits Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other substances.  These are part of the mixture that affects both the quality of the air and visibility.

The particulates may be washed from the air by rain, sleet, fog or snow forming acid rain.   When they settle on land they may settle permanently or be re-entrained.   In water particulates may settle, dissolve or both.

Naturally not all life survives as shown by the 2010 fish kills. Once in the air particulate matter generally takes a long time to settle.

Staying indoor with the air conditioner on may only bring these particles indoors.   Taking a stroll for the health conscious may be life threatening as airborne particles, may be deposited in the mouth, throat or nose and be ingested.   Think of this process as the slow kill.

Recent epidemiological research suggests that there is no threshold at which health effects do not occur.  In light of this, why would the government place the Anglesea Primary School so close to the Alcoa Anglesea Power Station, a toxic industrial polluter? Why did the responsible authorities  DSE, EPA, CCMA and Surf Coast Shire remain silent?

The health effects include:

  • toxic effects by absorption of the toxic material into the blood (e.g. lead, cadmium, zinc, arsenic, Beryllium, Cadmium, Chromium (III), Chromium (VI), Cobalt, Polychlorinated dioxins and furans (TEQ), Copper, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B[a]Peq),  Fluoride compounds, Hydrochloric acid, Mercury, Carbon monoxide, Sulphur dioxide, Boron,  Manganese, Zinc, Nickel, Chlorine)  and others
  • bacterial and fungal infections (from live organisms)
  • fibrosis (e.g. asbestos, quartz)
  • cancer (e.g. asbestos, chromates)
  • irritation of mucous membranes (e.g. acid and alkalis)
  • increased respiratory symptoms, aggravation of asthma and premature death. The risks are highest for sensitive groups such as the elderly and children.

Exposure is happening to the Anglesea Community.

The health risks are known by the Government.
When was the Government going to tell the Anglesea Community?

What have the EPA Victoria, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA) and Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Surf Coast Shire been doing?

Are they too close to Alcoa?   Are they looking but not seeing or just plain clueless?

The experiment continues this time involving children.  Who cares?

Great post thank you for sharing. The particulates are very much like asbestos fibres. It does not kill immediately but further down the track in time health effects begin. Good luck!

Despite the concerns of the parents and residents as to the health implications of the Alcoa Anglesea Pollution Pit next to the Anglesea Primary School, the Victorian Governments is not interested in helping fix the problem . Independent Air Quality Monitoring whould have been a start. Keep in mind the toxic emission near children, surely that must raise alarm bells? Mulder and Baillieu I voted for you last time. You have lost my Vote!
